Reconciliation Bill Drama
Congressional Republicans are racing the clock to pass a sweeping reconciliation package before Memorial Day. But as Alex reports, it’s a long shot. Speaker Mike Johnson has remained optimistic, aiming to move the bill through the House and onto the President’s desk. But key issues remain unresolved.
Major Sticking Points:
- Tax policy: The President is now signaling support for raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans — a reversal of earlier positions.
- State and local tax (SALT) deductions: Republicans from high-tax states like New York and California are pushing back hard. A proposed $30K cap was reportedly met with outrage.
- Medicaid cuts: The House Energy and Commerce Committee is tasked with finding $880 billion in savings. That’s unlikely to happen without forcing states to shoulder more of the cost — a move that could cost millions their coverage and blow holes in state budgets, including Oklahoma’s.
Political Poker at Its Finest
As Mitchell notes, Republicans are trying to pass this without any Democratic support. But with a razor-thin majority and vocal opposition from members of their own Freedom Caucus — including Oklahoma’s Josh Brecheen — this is a high-stakes game.
Meanwhile, on Trade…
The President announced a trade agreement with the United Kingdom — the first major deal following post-tariff tensions. It could mean:
- $5 billion in potential exports, especially for U.S. beef producers.
- Reduced tariffs on aluminum, steel, and British autos like Range Rovers and Jaguars.
But don’t expect fast results — the deal is months away from finalization.
